For the time when I am at home with my family, A Stylish Review seems to morph into a country bumpkin. Apart from going on tweed-clad hunts, straddling a pony and rearing sheep, it is embracing a week or two of country life.

It’s one of the hottest days of the year with mercury of the thermometer developing vertigo as it reaches new heights and it’s time to go in quest of some dappled shade, cake and tea. Whilst this post may be somewhat irrelevant to those of you who live no-where near Northamptonshire and see little reason to venture there (which is fair enough!) you may have somewhere similar near you and the piccies are worth a look at. The place we visited was called Kelmarsh Hall.

Afternoon tea was the only thing that could possibly save us from heat exhaustion so an obligatory round of Elderflower cordial, tea, cake and frangipane pie had to be consumed (purely medicinal I promise!).  With views from the  terrace spanning out over a stream and across the rolling countryside it was idyllic and felt thoroughly British. The big lawns bathed in sunlight reminded me of scenes from Atonement and the like where the gardens of huge country houses provided the perfect escape for flirty teens in tea-dresses and dashing city gents who inevitably court!

Because of the heat we didn’t go inside the house itself (I’ve seen it before and besides…a lot of the time they all look the same!) but the gardens definitely deserved a visit, if not for their smell more than anything else…
