A day at K-middy’s House

Now that a baby prince has been born the Royal Wedding seems a lifetime ago but all has not been forgotten. Who could forget that McQueen dress?! And this is a prime example of my level of interest in the royal family…if it’s about the dresses I’m keen, anything else and I’m not particularly bothered. With this in mind, I headed to Kensington Palace to take a look at the Fashion Rules exhibition and to have a nosey around Kate’s house. They’re having work done so excuse the scaffolding…

Spanning three decades from the Swinging Sixties to the shoulder-padded Eighties, Fashion Rules looks at how the Queen, Margaret and Diana followed the trends whilst sticking to the rules of royal dressing (i.e. no Mary Quant mini for the Queen). On loan from various fabulous wardrobes, the dresses in all their embellished, fur-lined and buttoned splendour sparkle behind the impressively fingerprint-free glass.

The exhibition highlights the difficult balance that had to be struck by the Queen in the Sixties- following new trends and embracing the changing fashions whilst needing to maintain a poised, polished and perfectly respectable persona. The same can be said for Diana’s bling bling evening gowns…

After taking a stroll through the royal fashion archives it was time to snoop. Ok, they didn’t let me look round Kate and Wills’ half of the house but you are allowed to mooch round the rest at your leisure.

After walking in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert it is essential to grab a San Pellegrino Limonata in the cafe before taking to the gardens. Perfectly groomed lawns, coiffed topiary and rows of flowers in full bloom…you wouldn’t expect anything less from the garden of a princess.

It was a lovely day out and nice to get a glimpse inside the wardrobes of royalty. But seeing people picnic in the palace gardens, or sipping champagne on the Orangery terrace or reading from a Kindle in the dappled shade of the leafy walkways was much more appealing. From the palace gardens take a stroll across into Hyde Park. What will you find in Hyde Park?…all to come very soon on A Stylish Review.
