Whether it’s a change in the weather, moving house, school exams, university deadlines, or work stress our skin is forever having a tough time. Breakouts, dry patches and blemishes then show their ruddy faces…hardly making the situation any better! But thanks to the odd tube of miracle cream, squirt of lotion and lick of balm and the odds of getting your skin back to its usual glowy self are in your favour. Even if they just make the tiniest bit of difference it is well worth it.
I tend to use a mixture of low and mid-range products. As a student, a face cream that comes in just shy of £100 is definitely off limits but I am happy to splash out on good quality, natural, chemical-free goodies once in a while if I know they will really make a difference and will last a good few months.
So here are my current top picks…
Liz Earle has a great philosophy…as a brand they try to keep everything as simple, natural and environmentally friendly as possible without compromising on quality and performance. The result? Beautiful products, beautiful skin and a guilt-free conscience. This spritzer acts like a toner and is best used after cleansing. It adds in any moisture that may have been stripped from your skin when washing off makeup or giving your skin a good scrub. Skin is left fresh, bright and revitalised.
This range by La Roche-Posay is specially designed for blemish and troubled skin. I was always very sceptical about products which claim to make your spots and blemishes vanish but this one has made me eat my words…it really does work! Available in Boots and at a very affordable price it is the perfect little tube of skin SOS goodness.
Often beauty is associated with time….1 hour facial, 8 hour cream, week-long detox, the list goes on. Doing things quickly and getting the job done in a matter of minutes never quite seems to be on the agenda. This is far from the case with this miracle product…give it just 10 minutes to work its magic and Bob’s your uncle. Use on days when your skin looks lacklustre, dull, tired, or blemish-y. The result? Healthy glowing skin with a beautiful even complexion.
What’s the point of serums? It does seem a little excessive buying a serum when you already look after your skin with cleansers, toners, moisturisers etc. But look at it like this…you might have a perfectly healthy diet, but you know that taking extra vitamins, or stopping by a juice bar for a green smoothie will do you some good and give you a good health boost. This serum is packed full of loads of complicated sounding bio extracts to supplement your usual routine and to give it a little bit of oomph when required. I use this one after late nights or when I look particularly tired to re-plump and replenish my skin
Whilst some of my friends are lip balm addicts (the finger is pointing at you Ms Ridley), I tend to forget to use it until it’s too late and my lips are left chapped and dry. Carmex sorts this out in no trouble at all and a soft peachy kissable pout is back! Not too gooey, not too sickly, and not too sticky.
With more skincare awards than Meryl Streep nominations this product is the godfather of all serums. Technically it is meant to tackle signs of ageing but women of all ages swear by this product. What a hot bath, good book, catch-up telly and a G&T does for your mood this elixir does to your skin…on waking it up it feels hydrated, soft, replenished and de-stressed. And if it has ageing benefits then surely that’s an added bonus?
This is a fairly recent addition to my skincare collection. My sister had started using Neal’s Yard products and had really noticed a difference so I thought I would hop on the bandwagon too. And what a good decision that was. Whilst some popular brands load their creams with fragrances, colours and chemicals but at Neal’s Yard the ethos is focused upon natural ingredients. One pump is all you need as the last step in your skincare routine…silky, nourishing, and smoothing.
One of Clarins’s most well-known products this gel/cream promises to brighten and tighten. Under make-up it proves itself to be a good primer for achieving a fresh-faced radiant look, but it really works wonders when worn bare-faced without make-up. A dash of this and you’ll be glowing, radiant and ready for the day ahead.
So whether you skin is tired, blemish-prone or lacking its usual glow there should be a product here that will work for you too! I generally find that the more natural a product is the better it is so bear this in mind when you’re out on your next skincare haul and hopefully the results will be radiant.
